Ford . How to Replace the Fuel Pump on a 2002 Dodge NeonA faulty fuel pump can cause problems with starting and running the engine in your 2002 Dodge Neon. The pump is located inside the fuel tank and cannot be replaced without removing the tank. A special tool, unique to Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep vehicles, will be needed to disassemble an electrical connector. Expect the process to take several hours, especially if you have not worked with your vehicle's fuel system before. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Metric wrench set Jack Jack stands Paint marker or paint and a fine paintbrush Water pump pliers Flat-head screwdriver Transmission jack Needle-nose pliers C-4334 terminal extractor Torque wrench Step by Step : 1 Open the gas cap. This will relieve pressure in the fuel tank. 2 Remove the fuel pump relay from the fuse box. The box is near the battery and air filter, on the right side of the engine compartment. The relay is in the lower-left corner of the panel--refer to the chart on the inside of the fuse box lid for the exact location. Pull up on the relay to remove it. 3 Disconnect the negative (black) battery cable by loosening the bolt on the cable and sliding the connector off the battery terminal. The battery is located in the right side of the engine compartment. 4 Start the car let it run until it stops. The fuel pump will not run with the relay removed, and this will relieve pressure from the fuel system. 5 Raise the rear end of the car and place it on jack stands. The car's jack points are the last several inches of the bottom edge of the body panel in front of the rear tires. They are marked with raised arrows molded into the panels. See the diagram in the car's owner's manual for details. 6 Mark the fuel pump assembly and fuel tank with a stripe of paint to record how the pump is aligned. The assembly is located on top of the gas tank under the rear passenger-side door. It is made of white plastic. 7 Disconnect the electrical connector from the assembly by sliding the red tab to the right, pushing down on the lever and pulling on the connector. Remove the fuel line from the assembly by squeezing the tabs of the clamp together and pulling on the connector. Loosen the fuel pump assembly using a pair of water pump pliers. 8 Label and disconnect the vapor hoses from the EVAP canister. The canister is a black box mounted behind the fuel tank, connected to three rubber hoses. Use paint to number the hoses and their positions on the EVAP canister. 9 Remove the EVAP canister by unscrewing the two bolts above the connection points for the hoses. Step by Step : 10 Drain the fuel tank into an approved gasoline container by unscrewing the drain plug from the tank. Step by Step : 11 Disconnect the fuel filler neck vent hose and the fuel filler neck hose. These two hoses run from the top of the fuel tank to the fuel filler and are connected by hose clamps. Loosen the clamps with a screwdriver, then pull the hoses loose. Step by Step : 12 Support the fuel tank with a transmission jack. Step by Step : 13 Remove the nuts that support the fuel straps. Only the rear nuts must be removed--there is no need to completely remove the straps. Step by Step : 14 Lower the fuel tank. Step by Step : 15 Remove the fuel pump assembly from the tank, being sure not to damage the components on the underside. Step by Step : 16 Squeeze the tab on the electrical connector on the assembly and unplug it. Remove the wedge lock from the inside of the connector by pulling firmly with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Step by Step : 17 Remove the terminals from the connector using the C-4334 terminal extractor tool. The tool should come with detailed usage instructions. Take a photo of the connector or draw a diagram to ensure that you wire it back correctly later. These components cannot be labeled with paint or markers--the markings will dissolve into the car's fuel, possibly causing problems. Step by Step : 18 Depress the tab on the fuel level sending unit and slide it off the fuel pump module. The unit is connected to the fuel level float. The rest of the fuel pump assembly is replaced as a single unit. Step by Step : 19 Replace the fuel pump assembly and reassemble the vehicle. Installation is reverse of removal. The fuel tank strap nuts should be tightened to 200 in-lbs. of torque. Tips & Warnings If the car still runs, use up as much fuel as possible before removing the tank. A floor jack can be used instead of a transmission jack. Place a square of plywood between the jack and tank to prevent damage. Be extremely careful while working with the fuel system--gasoline is very flammable. Be sure to use a gasoline container large enough to hold all of the fuel in the tank. The fuel tank holds up 14 gallons. Only use approved containers to store gasoline. Unapproved containers may be damaged or leech contaminants into the fuel.
Ford . 944 Fuel Pump ReplacementPorsche produced its 944 model from 1983 through 1991. The 944 came equipped with either a normally aspirated engine or a turbo engine. The manufacturer powered every 944 with a water-cooled, four-cylinder engine. The fuel pump on the 944 model is a key component within the fuel injection system. Fuel pump replacement may be required due to damage or failure. Total or partial failure of the fuel pump will negatively impact the performance and gas mileage of the car. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Battery terminal wrench Floor Jack Jack stand Lug wrench Fuel line lock Catch tray Screwdriver Torque wrench Step by Step : 1 Using the battery terminal wrench, detach the negative battery cable from the battery. 2 Raise the rear passenger side of the car off the ground and secure with a jack stand. Remove the passenger side rear tire by using the lug wrench. 3 Using a small metric wrench, loosen and remove the two nuts securing the electrical connectors. Remove the two electrical connectors from the fuel pump. 4 Secure the line lock tool on the fuel line from the gas tank near the connection to the fuel pump. Place the catch tray directly under the fuel pump. 5 Remove the hose clamp with a screwdriver that secures the fuel line connecting the fuel pump to the engine. Pull the fuel line away from the fuel filter to disconnect it from the fuel filter. 6 Loosen and remove the hose clamp securing the fuel line from the gas tank to the fuel pump. Pull the fuel line away from the fuel pump to disconnect the fuel line. 7 Use a small metric wrench to loosen the clamp securing the fuel filter to the inner fender well. Lift the fuel pump vertically to remove the fuel pump from the car. 8 Insert the new fuel pump into the fuel pump bracket and tighten using a small metric wrench. Replace the two electrical connectors and tighten the nuts with a wrench to secure the connectors. 9 Replace both of the fuel lines on the fuel pump and tighten the hose clamps with a screwdriver. Step by Step : 10 Remove the line lock on the fuel line from the gas tank. Remove the catch tray from under the fuel pump and properly dispose of any gas. Step by Step : 11 Replace the tire and tighten each lug nut to 90 foot pounds of torque with a torque wrench. Use the floor jack to safely remove the jack stand and return the vehicle to ground level. Step by Step : 12 Reattach the negative battery cable to the battery and tighten the connector using the battery terminal wrench. Tips & Warnings Removing the rear tire provides easier access to the fuel pump located in the fender well. Always verify the fuel system is not leaking gas by visually inspecting all connection points on the fuel pump after performing any work on the fuel system. *screw into the screwholder and use the screwholder instead of a screwdriver to tighten the screw. One type of screwholder has a magnet to hold the screw; another (see Figure 2-3) has a little gizmo that grabs the screw when you twist the screwholder. Both are lovely. Figure 2-3: A screwholder can help you get screws into hard-toreach places. Wrenches Wrenches are probably the most basic tools for auto repair. You need a couple of different kinds in different sizes. There are several basic types of wrenches, some for very specialized purposes, but the following sections cover the kinds you need for most jobs. Look for sets made by well-known toolmakers, and try to buy them on sale. (For more pointers on buying tools, see the beginning of this chapter.) The turning of the screw 153

You must know which system of measurement your engine is based on. Originally, most for eign vehicles (except British ones, which had their own thread standard) were based on the metric system, while domestic engines used SAE stan dards based on fractions of an inch. Today, most American vehicles have a mix of SAE and metric nuts and bolts. Foreign cars or foreign components Ford . How old do you have to be to get a learners permit in Wisconsin?

Combination Frenches When shopping for wrenches, you'll come across open-end wrenches and box-end wrenches, but the very best kind to get are combination wrenches, which have an open end and a closed end on each wrench (see Figure 2-4). These wrenches come in sets of several sizes, and each wrench is made to fit a nut of a specific size, whichever end you use. See the sidebar "How to use Ford . Offset Wrenches Some combination wrenches are sort of S-shaped. Called offset wrenches, these are good for working in hard-to-reach spots. You may want to add a couple to your tool kit. The most useful offset wrench is the distributor wrench, shown in Figure 2-5, which you use to adjust your car's timing. (You need this tool only if your car has a non-electronic ignition system.)
